No. 1: Erm, you’re fabulous?
Ok, I have to confess, this will in no way be 5 things anyone needs to know, whether you’re a curly girl or not, it’ll just be me typing away, kinda similar to the last 1, 2, 3. I just put that in the title because my husband keeps sending me articles like, ‘5 titles to grab your audience by the balls’ and ‘Make ’em stop and read: 10 key words to put in your titles’ with advice like ‘Use numbering, people are essentially stupid and like to be reassured you will break things down into simple bite sized chunks’, ‘Use words like needs/need, if you tell them to, they will need you’, & ‘know, knowledge is power, tell them you’ll give it to them’, ‘aim to appeal to a specific audience member, imagine this person and write like your having a conversation with them’.
Now re-read my title, I’ve ticked all the boxes haven’t I? You stupid, needy, curly haired thing looking for knowledge, you!!
Except maybe the speaking to them like I’m having a conversation, cause if I spoke like that I’d be a twat. A twat with no friends. Or a twat with shit twatty friends. And I can assure you I’m not a twat and I have some friends and not all of them are twats.
The title I wanted to write was ‘Hair!’ Then this picture
I want it long, straight, curly, fuzzy
Snaggy, shaggy, ratty, matty
Oily, greasy, fleecy
Shining, gleaming, streaming
Flaxen, waxen
Knotted, polka-dotted
Twisted, beaded, braided
Powdered, flowered, and confettied
Bangled, tangled, spangled, and spaghettied!
But aforementioned hubby said it was shit so I acted dutifully and changed it to the above.
Anywhoo, I digress. What I believe you asked is how the hell is my hair nowadays?
Well thanks for asking. It’s kinda amazing.
So, before my hair was good. Then, when I gave up all my favourite products it was scary. Now, it’s working.
No 2: Try ‘Naked Curly Girls’ products.
They’re quite lovely. Boots had buy 1 get 1 half price so I bought 4, obviously. Shampoo, conditioner, serum and curl tamer.
Naked Bounce Curl Defining Shampoo
The Shampoo is ok, it smells absolutely delicious but it makes my hair feel mega squeaky and dry, which I hate, and it knots immediately at the ends so I can’t wait to get the conditioner on just to get rid of the feeling and untangle ASAP. In fact, no I take it back, its not ok, I’m really disappointed. It really doesn’t suit my hair type. I’d be interested to hear from anyone that uses this and loves it as it might be just because my hair is so dry. If you have used this please comment and let me know what you think but I definitely won’t be buying again. 2 bunny stars.
No 3: Don’t Use Shampoo
I have heard from 2 different sources that us curly’s should ditch the shampoo and just use conditioner so I might try it. I am scared of having a smelly head and itchy scalp but I’ve just had a quick search and this site has some great tips so I’ll let you know how it goes.
Naked Bounce Curl defining Conditioner
The Conditioner is lover-ly, it smells beautiful, it feels lush when it’s on and easily gets rid of most knots with hand combing and my hair feels conditioned when dry. It doesn’t have any of the minging chemicals that give me a crusty scalp, pretty perfect. I would recommend this to all curlys. Not much more to say really. 4 Bunny stars
Frizz Serum
Boots had sold out of the Naked Divine Curls, Curling Serum and pretty I’m impatient so I went for this. I use it straight out the shower before I brush (I can hear hairdressers gasping at the thought of me using a brush not a comb on wet curly hair but hey, it works for me). Two pumps, then brush like this:- 10 strokes at back, 9 left side (that is if parting is on right), 8 on right, 7 behind, 6 left and continue to 0, catching more behind everytime until it is all scraped back. Now I’ve discussed this hair brushing technique/habit thing with a few people and most think I’m a total freak but occasionally they’re like, yeah, I do weird things like that. I literally can’t brush my hair any other way. This, by the way, isn’t wisdom or advice, It won’t change how your hair looks in the end, its just something I need to do and I thought I’d share. Back to the serum, its fine, I am frizz free. 3 Bunny Points

It’s true, its almost impossible to avoid the evil large corporations and true, The Body Shop do do a lot of other good stuff plus their Body Butters and second to none!
Just looked Desert Essence up and it looks like its available to the UK online, they look like a very good, ethical company so I’ll have to give their Conditioner a try come pay day. Thanks for the tip off!

I’ve enjoyed reading your posts! Good on you for your new blog! Looking forward to your Lush post. We lived near and worked in Poole (the home of Lush) back when it got started in the 90s, We’re in the US now and I was really excited to see they’ve started opening shops here. My kids love some of the sudsy fun bath products (although they are not cheap here, so it’s only on occasion). I myself waffle about the products I buy. Plus, full disclosure, I have a connection to The Body Shop (my take is they don’t test on animals, they support other important initiatives, like fair trade, and regularly give money to other issues, like anti-sex-trade initiatives, so they’re OK. I get that they’re part of the L’oreal behemoth, but if you spend on TBS or Urban Decay, and not the other parts, that’s still telling L’oreal that those are the parts of the company to grow… just my take though, and I’m hardly unbiased.) Likewise, Burt’s Bees, which has operations near the town I live in is owned by Clorox. Tom’s of Maine is owned by Colgate. So, while not impossible it seems to be getting harder to find companies that are easily available and truly independent of the big guys.
Also, I was also going to suggest a shampoo/conditioner that I’ve tried recently with good results – very moisturizing – and they’re on the “good” list: Desert Essence – which has many variations, but I was recommended and tried and liked was the Coconut. No idea how available it is in the UK, though.

Thanks Peggy, your blog made me instantly look up flights to south America! Today i used shampoo for the first time in ages and my hair and scalp are disgusting, i’d definitely advise giving it up if your hair is the slightest bit dry. Let me know how you get on if you do.

My husband gave up shampoo years ago and has never regretted it. I’m still thinking about it, but at least I use one that’s not tested on animals. Thanks for liking my blog. I like yours too, and the principles behind it. Well done.

Hey, your comment came at just the right time as I was looking for a new cleanser to take on holiday. I went in to get Ultrabland but came out with 9-5 (not sure how). It’s lovely though. I’m super lazy when it comes to cleansing and with this I just wipe and run. Its perfect. Thanks, my face loves you! x

I liked your title better! My hair is very much not curly so not really qualified to comment on anything else (except Lush: Lush is lush and Ultrabland is the best thing ever to take your make up off with).

I’m really pleased you like it! I would love it if you could write a guest piece on chemicals in products. Through looking at the cruelty side of products I have been made more aware of the chemicals used. It’s scary! So I’d definitely be interested to hear what you have to say on that side of things. I’ll email you to arrange it. But in the meantime I’ll check out Ms Alba’s site.
Now as far as the shampoo goes, I haven’t used it for the last 3 washes and I have to say it’s a great improvement, I’d recommend it if you don’t use too many products. If you do, you’ll probably need to use shampoo occasionally.
The other thing I’d recommend I’m just writing about now, so will post soon (but as its you, I’ll give you a preview. Get yourself down to Lush (Do they have Lush in Oz) and buy their RnB Hair Moisturiser, its amazing! I’m in love with it, honestly.)
Can’t wait to see those curls in action, they’ve been repressed for so long!

To the Lovely Beauty
Let me just say how lovely it is to be able to read your thoughts, and finally you have a creative outlet for you to display your beautiful talent at writing. I am very impressed at your little venture and would like to add that I too have also had a similar shock recently about the products (both beauty and cleaning) that I use daily. From my angle it’s was more about the chemicals that are in them, but you have made me increasingly paranoid about bunny free testing too, especially Chinese bunnies. I have been doing some research on chemical free products so if you ever need to interview someone let me know, I could be a secret international guest. Anyway have a look at the following website http://www.honest.com/, it’s owned and ran by Jessica Alba (who I here you cry) the Hollywood actress, and she has also got a book of which I am currently reading, which I think may be great interest to you, especially with Felix eczema.
I also write to you for tips on curly hair. As you know I am a frizzy haired 30 something women too and after years of over praying it to be slick and straight, blow drying it to an inch of its life, killing it with irons and let me tell you secretly BRUSHING, I have decided that I want to be curly again, and I need to know how I tame the beast. Top tips, product suggestions and bunny free products would be well received this end. I am looking for a very good leave in conditioner and also thinking about not using shampoo, maybe you could try and then recommend. I will write again, maybe with bunny free cleaning product suggestions, you could trial on those tiles.
